Optimizing Node.js API Response Times Under Heavy Load Lessons From Our Recent Deployment

When an application begins to get a lot of API calls, the API response time starts to be one of the metrics that matter most in terms of performance. Slow-running APIs cause bad user experience, higher server costs, and even lost sales opportunities. Recently, with our dedicated development team in India at Boffin Coders, a custom software development company in India, we have worked on a project that aimed to improve the performance of one of our Node.js APIs receiving heavy loads.

The project consisted of optimizing the performance of backend APIs for an application experiencing heavy traffic, while the speed of response should not be lower than the reliability of the API. Thanks to a combination of smart architecture solutions, database optimization, caching, and continuous monitoring, we managed to improve the performance of the APIs significantly.

In this article, we would like to share the lessons we learned from that project and show how companies can launch scalable Node.js applications and how it might be suitable for you to hire dedicated node.js developers in India.

Why API Performance Matters

Recent technologies operate on APIs. Throughout the use of a mobile app, SaaS, or online store, each action taken by the user can initiate a number of API calls.

Poor performance by an API may result in:

  • Slow loading times.
  • More expensive server costs.
  • Increased timeout failures.
  • Poor user experience.
  • Less scalability of the system.

Optimizing the API is important to deal with surging traffic and control expenses in terms of hardware infrastructure.

The Challenges We Faced

During our recent deployment, the application experienced several performance bottlenecks under heavy load.

Challenge

Impact

High concurrent requests

Increased server response time

Repeated database queries

Higher database load

Large API payloads

Slower network transfer

CPU-intensive operations

Reduced application efficiency

Limited caching

Frequent unnecessary processing

Instead of simply increasing server capacity, we focused on making the application smarter and more efficient.

Lesson 1: Identify Bottlenecks Before Optimizing

The hardest error that a developer can commit is optimizing without first tracking performance.

We monitored:

  • The average response time of the API.
  • The time taken to make a query to the database.
  • Memory usage.
  • Utilization of the Central Processing Unit (CPU).
  • The number of errors during the traffic peak.

Because of this, we could locate where exactly the delays had happened.

A structured audit of the performance shows that there are only a small number of APIs that are responsible for the majority of the performance issues.

Lesson 2: Optimize Database Queries

In the majority of the Node.js apps, it is the database that is the main performance bottleneck.

We achieved decreased response time by:

  • Removing unnecessary database calls.
  • Implementing proper indexes.
  • Fetching only necessary fields.
  • Avoiding performing duplicate queries.
  • Enhancing the query itself.

Example Approach: Instead of sending complete records (data), APIs should send only the information precisely needed by the frontend.

Better practice:

  • Select relevant columns.
  • Use pagination.
  • Limit large result sets.
  • Optimize joins.

Lesson 3: Implement Smart Caching

Caching was among the most productive upgrades during implementation.

Instead of repeating the same requests again, frequently accessed information is stored as a cache.

Data Cached

  • Frequently accessed user data.
  • Product information.
  • Configuration settings.
  • Public API responses.
  • Frequently requested reports.

Benefits of Caching

Without Cache

With Cache

Database queried every request

Cached responses served instantly

Higher server load

Reduced backend processing

Slower responses

Faster user experience

Increased infrastructure cost

Better resource utilization

A well-designed caching strategy can dramatically reduce response times during traffic spikes.

Lesson 4: Reduce API Payload Size

Big JSON responses increase transfer time over the network. We improved the payloads by doing the following:

  • Removing unused fields.
  • Compressing the responses.
  • Adding pagination.
  • Returning light objects.
  • Not having deeply nested data.

Reducing the payload helps improve performance, which is especially beneficial for mobile apps with slow internet connections.

Lesson 5: Use Asynchronous Processing

Node.js is built around asynchronous programming, but inefficient handling of long-running operations can still affect application performance. We moved time-consuming tasks to background processing whenever possible, allowing the API to return responses faster while these operations continued separately. This approach helps keep the main request-response cycle responsive, especially when the application is handling multiple requests at the same time. Node.js Event Loop Documentation

Examples include:

  • Sending out emails.
  • Creating reports.
  • Processing images.
  • Delivering notifications.
  • Uploading files.

Instead of keeping users in wait, APIs give out the needed feedback while the back-end workers take care of long tasks in the background.

Lesson 6: Improve Server-Side Performance

Performance on the application level means more than just writing good code.

We made the server faster by:

  • Using response compression.
  • Implementing connection pooling.
  • Reducing excess middleware.
  • Optimizing validation of requests.
  • Improving memory usage.

Even slight modifications made to server performance can help to make significant progress in terms of performance with heavy loads on the server.

Lesson 7: Scale Horizontally

Eventually, a single server reaches its maximum capacity as traffic continues to rise.

In this case, we designed the application to be able to run on several instances rather than just one powerful machine.

Advantages of Horizontal Scaling

  • Improves traffic distribution.
  • Makes applications more reliable.
  • Increases availability.
  • Improves fault tolerance.
  • Simplifies expansion of the infrastructure.
  • Decreases downtime for the updates.

With this method, it is much easier for Node.js applications to withstand great loads.

Lesson 8: Monitor Performance Continuously

Optimization is not something that happens just once.

After rollout, we kept watching over time:

  • API response time.
  • Number of requests.
  • State of the server.
  • Rate of errors.
  • How the database performs.

Continuous monitoring enables us to find any performance problems before the customers begin to notice them.

Best Practices for High-Performance Node.js APIs

The following are some useful tips for developers.

  • Make sure to use the right queries when working with databases.
  • When needed, implement caching.
  • Keep the API response small.
  • Make use of asynchronous processes.
  • Compress the response where useful.
  • Continuously monitor the application performance.
  • Make sure to use middleware effectively.
  • Scale your infrastructure as per the demands.

By applying those tips, you get an application that performs reliably even in times of high traffic.

When Should Businesses Optimize Their APIs?

API optimization should be made a priority when the application is facing:

  • Increasing traffic of users.
  • Slow loading times.
  • Delays of the mobile application.
  • Regular timeout errors.
  • High expenses of cloud infrastructure.
  • Multitude of large-scale integrations.

Delaying the optimization until it becomes a real problem is always much more costly than optimizing it early on.

Why Node.js Is Still a Strong Choice for Scalable Applications

Node.js is one of the commonly used backend programming languages for the following reasons:

  • Capability to carry out fast asynchronous processing.
  • High performance in API-based applications.
  • Robust ecosystem of development tools.
  • Ability to support real-time applications.
  • Facilitated scalability in modern cloud environments.

With the right architecture, Node.js can be a foundation for applications capable of processing millions of requests.

How the Right Development Team Makes a Difference

Performance optimization very rarely boils down to a single change of code. It needs knowledge and experience with backend architecture, infrastructure, database design, and application monitoring.

Companies that want to create scalable applications turn to hire dedicated node.js developers in India because they are aware of how to create APIs with performance and future development in mind.

Working with a dedicated development team in India also allows companies to be flexible when it comes to constant optimization, development of new features, and ongoing application support. Experienced development teams create applications with scalability in mind from the start instead of waiting and reacting to performance failures.

Being a custom software development company in India, Boffin Coders is focused on the creation of top-notch Node.js applications that are capable of performing well under heavy workloads. Our team works to create applications for businesses that will be fast, reliable, and scalable.
