AI search optimization is the work of getting your pages quoted inside AI answers. AI engines search before they cite, so it starts with ordinary SEO. Then each page is made easy to quote: a direct answer under every question, the subject named the way people search for it, and the same facts about your business everywhere.

AI Search Optimization in white and gold on navy, beside an AI answer whose first source, your page, is marked cited, and the finding that 11 of 21 AI Overview citations came from page-one sites.

The parts, in reading order

This series covers AI search optimization: getting your pages quoted, and your business named, inside the answers that Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity write. Each part answers one question with a check Boffin Coders ran itself, so you can repeat it on your own site. If the terms are new, start with GEO vs SEO.

Who it is for: Agencies that sell search work to their clients, and business owners who want their company named in AI answers.

When you are ready to build, see technical SEO services and white-label SEO for agencies.

The findings

What the series shows

Each finding comes from a check we ran ourselves, and the parts show how we ran it.

  • AI engines search before they cite, so a page has to be found before it can be quoted.
  • In our October 2026 check, 11 of 21 AI Overview citations came from sites already on page one.
  • 19 of the 21 cited pages named the subject of the question in their title.
  • Google says no llms.txt file or special markup is needed to appear in AI Overviews.
  • Engines quote single passages, so answer each question in the first two sentences under its heading.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

AI search optimization is the work of getting your pages cited and your business named inside answers written by AI engines such as Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It builds on SEO, because those engines search an index before they cite a source, and it adds habits that make a page easy to quote once an engine has found it.
