How Much Does App Development Cost, and What Makes a Quote Go Up?

There is no single app development cost. The seven cost guides on the first page of US results for this question quote anything from US$10,000 to US$700,000 for a whole app. Your price comes from hours, and the hours come from five lines of scope: the screens and flows, the data behind them, the integrations, the admin panel and the release work. Ask for each line priced on its own, at a stated hourly rate, and two quotes become comparable.
A range that wide does not help you budget. It tells you the guides are describing different apps, built by different teams, at different rates. The useful question is which lines your app has, and how many hours each one takes.
How much does app development cost?
We read the seven cost guides on the first page of US results for "app development cost" on 23 October 2026. Their headline ranges for a whole app run from US$10,000 to US$700,000. Three of them give a price for a simple app, and those prices start at US$25,000, US$40,000 and US$50,000.
Most guides sort apps into three sizes, and the question "how much does it cost to build an app?" usually means one of them. This is what the guides mean by each size, and the ranges they quote:
App size | What the guides mean by it | Ranges quoted on the US first page |
|---|---|---|
Simple | A booking tool, a notes app, a simple internal tool: login, a profile, a few screens, push notifications | From US$25,000 up to US$120,000 |
Medium | A fitness or productivity app, a basic marketplace | From US$50,000 up to US$200,000 |
Complex | A social network, a large marketplace with payments, a platform for a big organisation | From US$150,000 up to US$450,000 and more |
One guide suggests budgeting about 20% of the build cost for maintenance, on top of these figures. Another quotes hybrid apps at up to US$700,000, which is where the top of the range comes from.
Why are the published ranges so wide?
The ranges mix three things that a single figure hides. The first is the hourly rate: one guide lists rates by region, from US$40-50 an hour at the low end to US$120-200 an hour at the top. The second is the team: a freelancer, a small studio and a large agency staff the same app very differently. The third is scope, and that is the one you control. Two "simple" apps can differ by hundreds of hours once you list what each screen must do.
What makes an app development quote go up?
Hours make the price, and five lines of scope make the hours. A good quote prices each of them on its own.
Screens, flows and the states between them
Count flows, not screens. Sign-up, password reset, onboarding, checkout and cancelling a booking are flows, and each one crosses several screens. Every screen also needs its empty, loading and error states: what the user sees with no data yet, while data loads, and when the network fails. Quotes that count screens alone miss most of this work.
The data model
The data model is what your app stores and who may see each part of it. One kind of user is simple. Customers, staff and an owner, each with different rights, multiply the work in every screen that shows data. Offline use, where the app must work without a signal and sync later, adds a large block of hours on its own.
Integrations
Payments, maps, calendars, sign-in with Apple or Google, and your existing booking system or CRM are integrations. Each one brings its own testing and its own failure cases. An integration with a system that has no proper API usually carries the widest estimate, because the work depends on a system nobody on the project controls.
The admin panel
Someone has to manage users, content, refunds and support requests. That needs an admin panel, usually a web app of its own. It is easy to leave out of a first quote, and owners notice it is missing soon after launch.
Store release, review and migration
Apple and Google review every app before it goes live, and each store asks for privacy details, screenshots and account set-up. If you are moving users or data from an old app or a spreadsheet, the migration is a line too. Ask whether the quote includes the first release and its review, or stops at "app built".
Does building for iOS and Android double the mobile app development cost?
Building two native apps means two codebases, two sets of tests and the same feature built twice. A cross-platform toolkit changes that sum. Flutter's own documentation describes it as a toolkit built so code can be reused across iOS, Android, web and desktop. With one codebase, most screens, logic and tests are written once.
So the mobile app development cost for both platforms is well under double the cost of one. What stays separate is the work each store asks for: platform permissions, store listings, review on each side, and the occasional native feature that needs code for one platform. Ask a quote to show those lines for each platform, so you can see what the second platform really adds.
How do hourly rates change the app development company cost?
The rate decides the app development company cost as much as the scope does, and the two multiply. Here is the same made-up scope of 600 hours at different rates:
Hourly rate | Cost of 600 hours |
|---|---|
US$150 an hour | US$90,000 |
US$45 an hour | US$27,000 |
US$38 an hour | US$22,800 |
US$20 an hour | US$12,000 |
Illustration. The 600 hours are invented. The first two are examples inside the ranges the guides quote. The last two are the ends of our published band for mobile apps, US$20-38 an hour.
Rate is half the sum. A team at a lower rate that needs twice the hours costs the same as a team at double the rate. So compare hours per line first, then rates. If you are weighing whether to hire a mobile agency or a freelancer, the same rule applies: ask both for hours. To keep one developer on your app by the month, you can hire Flutter developers in India from US$3,500 a month, with no minimum term.
What does an app cost after launch?
The build is the first cost, and not the last one. These are the running costs to plan for:
Running cost | What it is | How much |
|---|---|---|
Apple Developer Program | Needed to publish on the App Store | US$99 a year |
Google Play Console | Needed to publish on Google Play | US$25, once |
Hosting and backend services | Servers, database, file storage, push notifications | Monthly, and grows with your users |
Yearly store rules | Google Play asks new apps and updates to target Android 16 from 31 August 2026, and Apple asks for apps built with Xcode 26 since 28 April 2026 | Developer hours each year |
Maintenance | Fixes, updates for new phone software, small changes | About 20% of the build cost, by one guide's estimate |
Owners often miss the store rules line. An app nobody touches for a year falls behind: Google Play stops offering an app that targets an old Android version to new users on newer phones, and Apple refuses uploads built with old tools. If your app uses AI features, the model calls are a running cost of their own, and what an AI feature adds to the bill is worth reading before you scope one.
How do you compare two app development quotes?
Put both quotes side by side and ask each team for the same six things:
- Hours for each line of scope, not one total: screens and flows, data model, integrations, admin panel, release.
- The hourly rate and who does the work, with the seniority of each person.
- What is left out: design, testing on real devices, the admin panel and the first store release are the usual gaps.
- Who owns the code and the store accounts once the work is paid for. This guide on who should own your software accounts covers what to ask for.
- When you pay: after you have seen each piece of work, or before work starts.
- How changes are priced: in hours at the same rate, or as a new quote each time.
Fixed price or hourly: which app development pricing protects you?
A fixed price feels safer, but the team builds its risk into the figure, and every change becomes a new negotiation. Hourly app development pricing with a scope agreed for each phase shows you exactly what you pay for, and lets you stop after any phase. The safest start is a small first version with only the flows your first users need. You learn what they use before you pay for the rest.
If you would rather have one team price your scope line by line, our mobile app development services page shows how a build is scoped, and you see each piece of work before you are invoiced for it.

Frequently asked questions
How much it costs to build an app depends on the hours its scope needs and the hourly rate. The seven cost guides on the US first page, read on 23 October 2026, quote US$10,000 to US$700,000 for a whole app, and simple apps from US$25,000. Pricing each line of scope in hours gives you a figure for your own app.
